Japanese Design
in the 80s

We are holding an exhibition titled “Japanese design in the 80s.” The 80s was an innovative period in which new designers such as Shigeru Uchida and Shiro Kuramata created a new Japanese aesthetic by not following the Western styles and getting out of the traditional Japanese forms and materials. The Western industries also appreciated the new Japanese design. As a result, the gap between Japanese designers and the Western market got closer. Moreover, the most powerful economy in Japanese postwar history attracted many foreign designers to conduct their projects in Japan, which promoted the globalization of Japanese design industries.
We are going to exhibit the works of Shigeru Uchida, Shiro Kuramata and other designers who were active in Japan in the 80s.
